About:

Bahía Drake (Drake Bay) is a small bay on the north side of the Osa Peninsula on the coast of southwestern Costa Rica, boarded by the world famous Parque Nacional Corovado. As one of the most isolated and beautiful destinations in Costa Rica, Drake Bay remains largely cut off from the rest of the country and therefore is brimming with wildlife. I particularly enjoyed the sheer amount of macaws soaring through the rainforest canopy (see photo). Costa Rica sure does a good job in making sure their animals are left to their own devices – the main reason why I love Costa Rica so much.

How to get there:

The best, quickest and cheapest way to get to this remote part of Costa Rica is boat tax. They leave from the small riverside town of Sierpe and take you down the picturesque mangroves of the Sierpe River and out into the ocean along the coastline of Drake Bay. The trip takes about an hour and costs $15-20 per person. Boat taxis leave the docks in Sierpe twice daily, at 11:30 a.m. ($15) and 3:30 p.m. ($20). Beware of crocodiles – although I didn’t get to see any on my boat trip.

What to see:

The bay provides a plethora of activities at your disposal. These include scuba diving, swimming, snorkelling, kayaking, horseback riding, hiking (Corcovado National Park), sport fishing, bird watching or exploring the miles of deserted picturesque coastline. My favourite spot was the hanging bridges – the perfect instagram photo.

Tip: There are no banks or ATM machines in Drake Bay and many businesses don’t accept credit cards, so be sure to stock up on cash before you arrive.

Where to stay:

We choose to look on AirBnB as we wanted to find something quaint and unique. We stayed at the affordable Pacheo Cabins (£41 a night), which were situated on a hill overlooking Drake’s Bay on the Osa Peninsula. The cabin has one of the most spectacular views in Drake’s Bay and there was so much wildlife to see from the hammock. Erick (the cabin owner) was so helpful with picking us up from the boat taxi and then arranging our transfer back to San Jose. I highly recommend staying here as the service and the views are outstanding. (as seen in the photos below).
